A smaller file is a different picture
The encoder writes AVC video. When the file has sound, it asks for Opus at 64 kbps, because this browser's AAC encoder is not available in the check we ran. It aims at 90 percent of the ceiling so a little overhead can still land under. It does not keep every detail of the original. There is no mode here that claims the picture is unchanged. If the sound cannot be encoded, the result says so.
Frame height the page will pick
| Height | Video bitrate it expects |
|---|---|
| 1080 | 2,200 kbps or more |
| 720 | 1,000 kbps or more |
| 480 | 500 kbps or more |
| 360 | 280 kbps or more |
| 240 | 120 kbps or more |
The height never goes above the source. Under 80 kbps the page asks you to shorten the clip or to confirm you want to try anyway. If the file comes back over the ceiling, it says the measured size.
